Translucency in porcelain

Room installations and luminous objects made of porcelain and light

After studying in China and England, Christiane Toewe dealt with the subject of light. A challenge for the trained ceramist to implement this in porcelain. After a year of exclusive development work in material, technology and firing process, the first series of ZIP's was finished and in 1991 it was on display in the ceramics museum WW.

The sculptural forms of the wafer-thin porcelain bodies dominate their surroundings with a great self-image. The formally strict but dynamic unique pieces create a strong, emotional atmosphere in every context as soon as the light goes on. They seem to dissolve their own materiality in the light.

The high-quality hard porcelain, fired at 1340 ºC, lives through the nuances of the white. The elaborately worked surfaces with different layers, reliefs, Scrafitti lithophane technique and painting develop a life of their own. Slits and openings blur the boundaries between interior and exterior.

Supplemented by the aspect of sustainability, as little material as necessary is used to make the greatest possible statement. Restraint captivates in shape, color and translucency.

In order to reflect her own interest in social life, Christiane Toewe has also translated this into porcelain.

Themes such as migration, #MeToo, communication, mobility, consideration, environmental destruction, ... can be found in her museum room installations.

Video, photography, sound and modeled light complement the works as appropriate.

The new catalog is here and ready to be picked up in the studio.
